7 of the Best Places to Meet New People ...

With most of us conducting our lives on line, sometimes finding the best places to meet people can be a challenge. What with internet shopping and devices with which you can play tennis or bowl without even leaving your living room, I sometimes wonder whether some larger force is preparing us for a time when leaving the house will no longer be necessary (or possible?) but maybe that’s just the conspiracy theorist in me screaming to get out a bit more. Before we reach that point though, here are some of what I believe are the best places to meet people.

1. A Touch of Class

The only way to increase your chances of meeting people is by actually doing a range of things. Classes are one of the best places to meet people where you can mix with those who have common interests or who are equally in search of horizons new. How about learning a new language or going to a cookery class? I taught an adult evening class once and it was great to see people mingle. I know many of my ex-students have remained in contact with each other since and as a result of the classes and it’s nice to know I’ve contributed to the expansion of their social lives in some way!

2. Team Players

Getting involved in a team sport is another great way of meeting people. You’ll create bonds with your fellow teammates and get involved in social events with them too. A friend of mine plays for a netball team and regularly meets with her teammates away from the netball court and also with members of the team against which she frequently plays. A bit of healthy competition never hurt anyone!

3. World Wide Web

It’s not called the World Wide Web for nothing. The internet has revolutionized relationships and the ways in which we communicate with others on a daily basis. Okay, so I did berate the overuse of the Internet earlier and now I’m condoning its use as a social tool, but realistically the Internet does come with a word of warning. We’ve all heard horror stories about the people we meet online not being who they seem (Craigslist killer and Catfish to name but a few examples). If you’re going to use the internet to meet others be sure to inform people of your movements just to be on the safe side.

4. It’s a Family Affair

Relatives are also a good source for meeting new people. Don’t pass up opportunities and try and accept all invitations to family and friend events. It can be tempting to pass up that opportunity to go to Aunt Silvia’s 60th birthday but you never know who is going to be there! Also, often your friends’ friends can become your friends so you can expand your social circle by meeting them.

5. Everyday People

You never know who you’re going to meet at your usual haunts like the coffee shop, bookshop, library, the cafe or the supermarket. Don’t underrate these seemingly mundane every day opportunities.

6. Variety is the Spice of Life

If you’re doing the same things and not getting the results you want then surely the key is to shake things up. A friend of mine once said she was finding it difficult to meet a nice guy but it transpired that the reason was primarily down to the fact she was going to the same bars and clubs and meeting the same people. She was therefore getting the same undesired results. My advice was to go to different places to expand her social horizons, which she did and she’s certainly reaping the social benefits as a result!

7. A Little Help from My Friend

This is a great way to meet people. Not only do you get a warm fuzzy feeling inside because you’ve done something selfless and helped save the world, (well, not exactly) you’ll meet a range of people who also have the same people-helping and life-loving philosophy.

There are a range of places you can go to meet people and it’s also about building confidence and doing things you wouldn’t normally do. As with everything in life, the key is to remain open-minded. Where do you find are some of the best places to meet new people?
