You Could save a Life!

You Could save a Life! One of the most important and fulfilling reasons to adopt a pet is that you could indeed save a life. Unfortunately, there are many people that give up their pets to shelters, and because shelter space is limited, millions of dogs and cats are euthanized every year. If more people adopted pets from shelters, this number would decrease tremendously. And think about it, not only would you be saving one life of the animal you adopt, but also of another one on the street that is taken into a shelter!

2

They Make Great Companions

Let’s be honest, we all wish we could cuddle with someone, sometimes all the time. The best part about a pet is most of the time, they do too! Pets also make great listeners. Sure they won’t talk back (or understand you) but sometimes all you need is someone to vent to.

You Won’t Be Supporting Pet Stores/puppy Mills

You Won’t Be Supporting Pet Stores/puppy Mills Puppies that come from puppy mills are poorly treated and usually their parents are kept in cages without any sort of human companionship. After breeders at the mills make money off of the parent pets, they either kill them or abandon them. The unfortunate thing is, most people don’t know that many pet stores only get puppies from mills and because of this, they are willing to spend thousands of dollars while supporting this terrible industry.

Pets Prepare You for Bigger Responsibilities

Pets Prepare You for Bigger Responsibilities As much fun as they are, pets are also a lot of work. From changing your kitten’s litter pan to walking your puppy three or four times a day, sometimes it isn’t always easy to keep up. Speaking from experience, growing up with a pet definitely prepared me for living on my own. When you have to take care of something aside from yourself, you tend to manage your time more wisely.

5

They Can Keep You Active

They Can Keep You Active Walking your dog or playing with your cat for just fifteen minutes a day is not only a great way to bond with your pet, but it’s also good for them and for you too! Who needs Zumba when you can go jogging with Fido?

Famous Quotes

Love is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable.

They’re a Good Distraction

I recently went through a bad break-up and after the first few weeks of dwelling on my past, I decided that I needed to keep busy. The first thing I did was adopted a kitten and I can honestly say it was the best decision I could have made. My kitten keeps me busy and whenever I feel sad I can just pet him and it instantly makes me happier! Petting a cat or dog has known to be a great stress reliever for a lot of people and even known to lower high-blood pressure!

7

They Just Love You!

They Just Love You! There is no better feeling than coming home to a pet that has been waiting for you to get home all day! My kitten knows the sound of my footsteps so he runs to the door when he hears me coming home from school or work. Not only is it adorable but it’s also such a comforting feeling to have a pet to come home to.

There are so many good reasons to adopt a pet. What do you like most about having a pet? What other reasons can you think of to adopt a pet?

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

Soon I will be adopting a pet from a shelter. I live in Nova Scotia Canada and will be getting mine from shaid. I will be adopting an adult though, not a kitten:)

I got a kitten when I first moved out because I hated coming home to an empty house. I have had her for 10 years now and she is the best stress reliever ever. I suffer from a chronic pain illness and when I'm not coping she knows and she will come lye on my chest to keep me company. It's amazing the bond I have with her, getting her was the best thing I have ever done. X

Ashley, fantastic post<3. Please, if you plan a shelter adoption, please consider adopting an adult dog or cat; puppies & kittens find new homes much faster than older animals, and older animals are far more likely to be euthanized. FYI: more than 4,000 dogs are euthanized on average every DAY in the U.S. So you are literally saving a life if you adopt an adult pet. Also, there are advantages: adult pets are housebroken; they are usually already spayed or neutered; and they have already forged a bond with a human parent, and so they are greatly in need of re-establishing a human connection. And, if you have the time and resources, please consider a special-needs pet. So many sick and injured animals are abandoned, it is criminal! Yes, these pets require more time, and of course more care, which means money. But, if you love animals a special-needs pet will provide you with so much unconditional love and affection, you will have such a special bond with your pet, few things can compare to it. Of course, this also means accepting that your pet may die or need to be compassionately euthanized sooner, but you will have provided this animal with so much more quality-of-life time! Again, you will have literally saved a life.

Another pro to adopting from a shelter (at least the one I went to) is that they may include some of the initial start up costs in the adoption rate. At our humane society they charged $50 but it included shots, neutering, and a microchip, so that was really affordable

I got a dog from a lady who had adopted him from an animal rescue centre in Los Angeles. She couldn't keep him because one of her sons kept teasing the dog and she knew it would only be a matter of time before he bit her son! Her loss was our gain!! It is true what you say about adopting a special needs dog, but unfortunately my dog was abused badly before the last lady (before me) adopted him from the rescue place in Los Angeles.
