Are you in need of some helpful ways to stay awake during class? I often find myself drifting off into dreamland if my professor is really boring or if I didn't have a enough rest the evening before. And this can really be a problem if you are trying to pass! You need to be able to take notes and pay attention! I know how hard this can be, so I've gathered a few ways to stay awake during class that I use!
1. Get Enough Sleep
Getting enough sleep is an important way to stay awake during class. Sleep helps to rejuvenate the body and mind and if you don't get enough at night, your body will force you to sleep during the day. Try to find the right time to hit the hay so you can be sure you get enough sleep. Being nice and refreshed for your morning classes will definitely pay off! You will be more attentive and be able to take organized notes.
Participating not only makes you look good to your professor but you will be more awake too! Being active in class is like being active during your workout. If you're working your mind, you won't fall asleep! So if you find yourself drifting off, raise that hand and ask a question or participate in the discussion! You'll get nice participation points and you'll be awake!
3. Bring a Cup of Coffee
If you're an avid coffee drinker like I am, then you know how great it acts as a waker-upper! If you're allowed to, bring a cup of coffee with you to your boring class. If you start to feel your head bobbing up and down, just help yourself to some more caffeine! Just don't substitute coffee for sleep because sleep is still very important. But as long as you don't drink coffee all of the time, it is a great way to stay awake!
4. Take a Trip to the Restroom
Getting up and walking around is always good at keeping you awake. So taking a journey to the nearest bathroom won't waste a lot of time and it will wake you up a bit! You can splash some water on your face to really get your mind working. Then you're good to go!
5. Sit in the Front
Sitting in the front of the class requires you to be very aware of what's going on around you. Having the professor right in front of you during class allows you to hear him better and see the board more clearly. And when you participate, the teacher will see you right away and call on you before the people in the back. You won't be able to hide behind the tall guy while you catch up on your sleep anymore so make sure you pay attention!
6. Take Notes from the Beginning
If you start out actively writing and taking notes, it will be easier to continue throughout the class. Even if the class is boring, make it more fun by taking interesting notes! I like to write a point and then draw a diagram or picture explaining what I wrote. I might not use it to study but it helps me stay awake and be more aware during class!
7. Eat before Class
Eating a nice healthy breakfast before your boring class will give you the energy you need to stay awake. Having a well balanced meal full of protein will keep you up and ready to participate! You can even bring breakfast bars or other snacks with you to class just in case you get those embarrassing hunger gurgles!
Falling asleep in class is never a good idea. Although you may not want to hear your professor drone on about math or grammar, you can have some nasty consequences if you fall asleep unexpectedly! This includes having people draw on your face or tape things on your back! P.S. I've seen this done before! So follow these tips to help you avoid these embarrassments and also missing important class info! Did you find these tips helpful? Have you ever fallen asleep in class before?
