8 Good Reasons Why Books Are Better than Kindles ...

Books are better than Kindles. That opinion might shock technophiles, who love having a small library at their fingertips, but although Kindles are space-saving, I prefer books. There are a number of reasons why I consider that books are better than Kindles and always will …

1

Artwork

Part of the pleasure of books is the artwork, both on the cover and any illustrations among the text. Kindles just won´t have the same effect. Then there are art books, for example – how could this type of book ever work on a Kindle?

2

Gifts

Many people love to give or receive books as gifts. In this case, books are better than Kindles – sending a download just wouldn´t have the same effect. Sure, it saves paper, but a download could never replace an actual book as a gift (nor is it easy to browse to find something that the recipient might like).

3

Page Turner

Another reason I prefer books is that there´s definitely a real pleasure in curling up with a book and turning the pages – how could scrolling through pages on a screen have the same effect? While I can see that a Kindle would be useful on a long trip, I´d still rather pack some paperbacks.

4

Second Home

Once you´ve read a book, you can pass it on to someone else for them to enjoy. Charities especially can benefit from selling donated books, raising valuable funds for their work. Or you can give it to a friend. Downloads, on the other hand, can´t be resold.

5

Eye Strain

Spending much of my working day on the computer means that I don´t want to spend all my leisure time on it as well. And what is a Kindle but a mini computer screen? Perhaps it´s designed not to tire your eyes, but I´d rather not risk eye strain.

Famous Quotes

To give oneself earnestly to the duties due to men, and, while respecting spiritual beings, to keep aloof from them, may be called wisdom.

Old Friends

Do you have any old books from your childhood, or that remind you of someone (perhaps the donor)? In this way, books are better than Kindles because of the happy memories that they can evoke. There´s so much pleasure to be gained from seeing an old favourite sitting on your bookshelves.

7

Decorative

While I´m not a fan of the kind of coffee table book that is designed to make the owner look like someone with taste, books do have a decorative purpose. A shelf full of pristine paperbacks or handsome hardbacks is pleasant to see – homes without books always seem empty to me.

New is Not Always Better

In today´s fast-moving world of technology, people are always on the search for something newer and better. Well, the printed book has been around for over 500 years, and I don´t think it can be bettered by a bunch of pixels. Give me a proper book any day.

There are so many reasons why – for me, and I´m sure for many others as well – books are better than Kindles. I really don´t think that the technological upstart is about to see off its printed cousin. Do you agree, or are you in love with your Kindle?

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

I actually love, love my kindle and I thought I would be like you. You are correct on pictures put since most of my books are not illustrated no bigger. I have a nice cover so I feel like I'm holding a book, and turning pages I don't even notice, if anything it is easier on my hands. I hardly buy books for it, they are all freebies. As for eye strain since a regular kindle is e-ink there is no back lighting no eye strain. It is great for reading out side. It is saving my budget because I no longer buy books for the most part. I have a huge library on my kindle with books I never thought I would own. I also have kept my old favorites, but I am getting them when I can on my kindle so I can have them when I go places. I honestly think people would be surprised at how nice e books are (I would not read on a back light screen, my husband has a fire and it is nice for somethings but as a reader doesn't work for me) I have yet to meet a reader that once they try a regular kindle/nook hate it. For me anyway I can read a book the better. I won't turn down a regular book and if someone gifts me a gift card to amazon I will be a happy camper.

nothing can repalce the books!!!

while i think my kindle is good for buying books at a cheaper cost, i still prefer the feel of books rather than the smooth of the plastic. my book shelf is still full, but i have no excuse to wait in anticipation for a book to come out and run out or que to buy it, i now can have it at a click of the button. will i keep using my kindle ? yes but only for single books or trilogys, but for well loved incomplete series or new found treasures , i will be returning to the smell of newly printed pages.

You definitely aren't alone in your opinion. I got a Kindle for Christmas, decided it wasn't my thing, and I've asked several friends if they'd like it (for free even!) and none of them wanted one. It just isn't the same.

You're forgetting how wonderful books smell! I love the crackle of the binding when I open a new book, and the way the pages smell so clean. And old books have a 'wise' smell, and it takes you back through the years the book has lived...
