A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin Price: $21.48 at amazon.com

One of the best fantasy novels of all time and one of my personal favorites, A Song of Ice and Fire is a captivating, mind-blowing epic saga you’ll want to eat up book by book, place by place, character by character until you start feeling half Westerosi yourself! Then you’ll want to read them again so you could pick up all those subtle hints you’ve missed on your first read and would probably dwell on them, trying to figure out what’s going to happen and would continue to do so until the next book comes out! LOL! Sounds geeky? Oh, but I wouldn’t want to have it any other way! And if you’re planning to visit your grandparents or spend the summer away from your friends and any potential sources of fun&action, you’ll definitely want to have this portable yet oh-so-real world at hand, ready to suck you in and show you one hell of a ride!

The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson

The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson Price: $16.30 at amazon.com

There’s plenty of great fantasy novels out there just waiting to be picked up and this fantastic trilogy certainly falls under that category! The story itself is way too complicated for me to summarize (and you know being laconic is just not one of my talents) but I can promise you a carefully though-out world and a story that doesn’t lack any of the elements crucial for a memorable epic read! Check it out – if you loved ASoIaF, you’ll definitely enjoy this one just as much!

3

Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth

Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth Price: $9.99 at amazon.com

Next on my list of best fantasy novels to read over the summer is another post-apocalyptic mix of teen romance and action woven together into a very interesting yet not overly complicated plot. Now, I don’t really like to compare books but, if I had to, I’d probably say this one is something you’d want to pickup in case you loved The Hunger Games and the up close and personal, first person, concise style Collins used to deliver her story to the reader. Not as nearly as elaborate as the first suggestion and definitely not as the next one, this book will keep you entertained on the beach, without enslaving you to such a degree that all you can do is eat, read and sleep. So, if you enjoyed reading The Hunger Games and would love to take your chances with a similar yet different story, this one would be one of the best summer reads for you!

4

The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan

The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan Price: $15.62 at amazon.com

Full of magic, mystery and action, this amazing epic saga comprises of 13 published books so far, each so interesting you won’t be able to stop reading! I’m talking about dark forces, prophecies, a map of the whole new world to lose yourself in and a story as good as the one you’d expect from Martin or Tolkien! An awesome fantasy novel indeed, regardless of what some may think of it and, although I’m still not finished reading it, I’d say choosing it was a great choice!

5

The Malazan Book of Fallen

The Malazan Book of Fallen Price: $89.98 at amazon.com

Speaking about great fantasy novels, here’s another cool story I’d like to bring to your attention! And since its stretches to whopping 10 books, opting for it to keep your imagination running this summer will really mean keeping your imagination busy all summer long. It’s on my list of summer must reads too and, since I have this weird habit of reading through the first few chapters to determine whether the story is something I could see myself submerged in, let me just tell you I’m more than pleased and more than willing to say, “Go with it”, despite the fact that I haven’t actually red it yet.

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams Price: $7.99 at amazon.com

Followed by a funny, totally captivating sequel titled The Long Dark Tea-Time of The Soul, this science fiction slash fantasy slash comedy could be one the best summer reads for you in case you admire Adams’ utterly weird mind and his ability to take you to strange places, using weird paths yet laughing all the way. I’m not even sure this could be described as “fantasy” since dragons, wizards and strange gods aren’t really on his list of priorities but, if you find yourself flipping the last page of the first book, immediately grabbing its sequel, you’ll understand why I felt the need to include it in my list.

7

Lord of the Abyss by Nalini Singh

Lord of the Abyss by Nalini Singh Price: $5.50 at amazon.com

Okay, well it’s pretty clear this is a romantic novel all the way, which may lead you to believe the plot poor and protagonists one-dimensional and only interested in jumping each other’s bones. Well, that’s where you’d be wrong as this is one of the most intriguing, most fascinating and most elaborate love stories ever that will surprise you in more ways than one and keep you on your toes all the way through. It may not be one of the best fantasy novels of all times but it is without doubt one of the best summer reads a hopelessly romantic fantasy addict can hope for!

Well, there you have it – a few of the best fantasy novels every fantasy addict would approve of, a few trans-genre reads to help you snap out of one elaborate imaginary world and prepare yourself for facing the next and even a few romantic reads for all of you “shippers” who appreciate a story that, for once, goes a full circle, refusing to shy off happy endings regardless of how cheesy and Disney-like they are! But, what about you? Do you have an awesome fantasy novel to suggest? Do share!

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

I'm in the process of writing a fantasy book, that hopefully will get published.

Belgariad, 5 books, and then the sequel, Mallorean, another 5 books, by David Eddings. He's written a few more series that I haven't read. The Belgariad and Mallorean contain fantasy worlds with characters who have special powers and live thousands of years and fight evil.
