All Those Bad Boyfriends
Many of the things you need to dump before you turn 30 involve your previous baggage – and that baggage probably contains at least a few bad boyfriends or girlfriends. It's time to say peace out and move on toward a relationship that fulfills you. There's someone out there who will bring you up, not tear you down, so dump those bad relationships once and for all.
The Junk Food Diet
For most of us, our metabolisms start to go downhill once we hit our late 20s, which means that the idea of “a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips” because an infuriating truth rather than a cutesy cliché. That's not to say you can't enjoy your favorite junk food delicacies once you hit 30, but you can't make an entire diet out of them. All things in moderation, and all that jazz.
Frequently asked questions
Your Eating Habits
Actually, you should take a look at your eating habits in general. If you're 28 or 29 and still eating like you ate in college, stop it. This takes time, but you can do it. Heather still lives on Ramen and popcorn when I'm not here, so don't worry if it's a slow process. You'll get there! And yes, you can still enjoy Ramen occasionally, if you still like it.
Your Body Shaming Habits
You're beautiful. The end. I don't care how tall you are, what you weigh, or what your bra size is. The size you wear doesn't matter. If you want to work out and get fit for yourself and your own happiness, bravo, that's excellent! But now is the time to embrace yourself, to learn to love yourself. As you get closer to 30, promise that you won't ever stand in front of the mirror and critique yourself. Don't bemoan the size of your nose or the shape of your eyebrows. Never look at yourself and say you're too fat or too thin. You're not.
All Your Shaming Habits
Ideally, women should be more emotionally and mentally mature as they get close to 30. It's time to stop shaming other women. Don't slut shame, don't body shame, don't do any shaming. We should be empowering each other. It's time to embrace, y'all, not deface.

A Lax Attitude toward Your Health
A lot of women are lax about their overall health in their 20s. You'll visit the dentist and the eye doctor when necessary, but although it's important to establish a relationship with a general practitioner and an OBGYN, some of us keep putting off those aspects of our health. Dump those habits before you hit 30 and get yourself sorted – you'll be grateful later.
All-Nighters
So, I don't know when staying up until 5am stopped being a good idea, but it now wrecks me for about three days afterward. Sound familiar? All-night study sessions or parties were cool enough in your early 20s, but the older you get, the more you feel it. You can still have a great time, but give your body and mind time to rest, honey!
Your High School Clothes
What I mean is, you need to clean out the closet. Far be it from me to tell anyone what they should wear – who cares if it's popular or trendy? Just make sure you're not holding on to crop tops and skinny jeans that no longer fit. Ditch anything full of holes, even if it makes you nostalgic. I won't say you should dress for your age, exactly, but you might want to reevaluate your style.
Negativity
Stop being so negative, about yourself and others. Try not to be pessimistic about things in your life, whether it's your love life or your job prospects. Embrace positive thinking and positive things will follow!
The Gossip Gene
I might be wrong, but I believe everyone gossips. It's not always malicious but it can cause trouble. It would be hypocritical of me to tell you to stop gossiping completely; I'm 32 and I fully admit I still do it. However, try to tone it down and definitely take the negativity out of it. Don't spread unfounded rumors and don't gossip with the intention to hurt someone else.
Fair-weather Friends
You need to evaluate your romantic relationships but it's time to pay attention to your friendships as well. Do you have any friends who breed negativity or bring you down? If you have toxic friends, your transition into a new decade may give you the perfect opportunity to move away from them. Protect yourself and don't hold onto anything that hurts you.
Your Selfie Obsession
No, you don't have to stop taking selfies. This is more about the idea behind some selfies – the selfie absorption, if you will. Start thinking about others. Don't be self involved all the time. A little selfishness is necessary, but ditch any tendencies toward self obsession.
Any Inflatable Furniture
What I mean is, give your home décor a makeover. All that stuff from Urban Outfitters and Spencer's looked awesome in your 20s, but you may want an update now. You don't have to get rid of everything, just think about polishing your style a little.
Fake Greenery
Again, you don't have to get rid of silk flowers and pretty but fake plants entirely. It's just that if all the plants in your home are fake, why not make the commitment to living plants now? You're ready!
That Rebellious Streak
Absolutely, you can still be a rebel! However, stop rebelling against unimportant things. Stand up for what you believe in, but don't rebel just for the sake of rebelling, you know what I mean? Take a stand for something meaningful.
OTT Makeup
By all means wear what you love and what looks good on you – but that's the key. In your early 20s, for instance, you looked banging in bright blue eye shadows, but now you might want to tone it down. Try darker versions of your favorite colors and don't put shimmer everywhere. Just update your look so it complements the beautiful woman you continue to be.
Body Glitter
No qualifiers here, and it's not even a style thing. Stop wearing body glitter as you get closer to 30 simply so you don't have to keep cleaning up glitter around the house. That sucks.
Relationships That Hold You Back
We've discussed this a little, but it bears repeating. Ditch any romantic or platonic relationships that hold you back, but look at your professional relationships and even your family members, if need be. Colleagues and cousins can be toxic too. You're getting older but you're also continuing to grow and learn, so it's time to say goodbye to anyone who doesn't hold you up.
The Empire Records Fantasy
Insert your favorite movie cliché here. I wanted to own a record store all through my 20s, but I had to admit it wouldn't happen. Most of your dreams are worthwhile and you should go after them, but don't confuse fantasies with dreams. Damn the man and save the empire, absolutely, but go for the gold in the meantime.
Grudges
Grudges hurt you more than anyone else. Let go of your grudges. No matter who wronged you or what they did, you need to move on for yourself.
Constantly Borrowing Cash
It's time to get financially responsible. Occasionally borrowing money is fine, as long as you always pay it back. If you constantly have to ask friends or family members for loans, if you're barely making it paycheck to paycheck,
Your Affinity for Procrastination
Procrastinating may have worked in college, but this is real life, baby. You can't put work projects and personal responsibilities off until the last minute, it just doesn't work that way. Ditch your procrastination problems and work on your time management instead!
Guilt Trips
Don't give them. Don't accept them. You don't need to be manipulated that way, nor do you need to manipulate anyone else.
Spendthrift Tendencies
Retail therapy may have its place, but try to curb your tendency to over-spend. It's time to start saving. You'll be glad you dumped your retail habits when you need your nest egg.
Anything Holding You Back
No matter what it is or where it comes from, dump anything that holds you back. This is your time.
Your 30s are wonderful. You'll experience so many new and exciting things, no matter what path you choose! What do you want to ditch before you hit the big 3-0?
