7 Ways to Take Control of Your Life ...

Taking control of your life can seem a tough thing to do, if not impossible. We can feel helpless when faced with so many ways in which we are not in charge. Politicians, family, partners … all can make us feel that taking control is out of our reach. But there are steps we can take to feel that we have more power over our own lives. Here are some tips on how to take control of your life …

1. Recognise Mistakes

Taking control of your life starts with recognising that you have made mistakes. We all do, that´s part of being human. And we make mistakes that lead us to give up control to other people without realising it. In acknowledging and identifying your mistakes, you gain awareness of how to avoid repeating those mistakes, and start to regain control over your life.

2. Don´t Give Others Power

How often do we give others power over our lives? Even when we´re adults with our own families, our parents can still make us feel that we are children. However, they can only get away with this if you let them. Don´t give other people the power to make you feel small, inadequate or that your decisions are poor – you have the right to make your own choices, whether good or bad in the eyes of others.

3. Make Decisions

To be truly in control, you have to be prepared to make decisions. That can be scary, it´s true, and we do often doubt if we have made the right choices. But how can we say we´re in control of our lives if we leave it to others to make all the decisions for us? Be brave, be bold, and make your choices.

4. What Matters to You?

If you are to know how to take control of your life, then you must also decide what is important to you. What are the things that matter to you? If you give up everything that you enjoy and want to achieve, you are definitely not in control. Live the way you want and pursue your dreams.

5. Responsibility

Being in control means taking responsibility for your own life. When you´re in a relationship, it can be very easy to let the other person make decisions for you, especially if they´re a dominant personality. By all means take responsibility for different aspects of your life together, if that suits you both, but take responsibility for something.

6. Be an Adult

As I mentioned earlier, our parents often find it hard to see us as independent adults, and try to boss us around no matter how old we are. Taking control means being and behaving like an adult. You don´t have to behave in an ´old´ manner, but if you want to be in charge of your life, you do have to behave like a grownup, and do adult things like look after your finances.

7. Take Action

It´s alarmingly easy to let life just drift by and go wherever it takes us. While there´s something to be said for going with the flow at times, there are situations when you need to take action. Don´t be passive all the time – take steps to ensure that your life goes where you want it to go.

If you feel that you have no say in what happens to you and you´re wondering how to take control of your life, read these tips carefully and work out what you can do to change things. Taking control is the only way to ensure that you get what you want out of life; otherwise you will just drift through the years and wonder why you aren´t satisfied. Have you ever managed to take control even when the situation seemed impossible, and how did you achieve it?
