Self-Defense

Since you don’t live in the wild, other people are your biggest threat. If you get mugged or start a fight, you need to know how to protect yourself. You don’t have to become the world’s next best fighter. You should just be able to keep yourself from getting brutally hurt. You should enroll in a self-defense class in order to learn some essential skills that could save your life.

2

Change a Tire

Even though you can call AAA, that doesn’t mean that you should. If you have a spare tire in your trunk, you shouldn’t need help to change it. When you break down, it won’t always be in a nice part of town. You could end up stranded on a highway in the middle of the night. If that happens, you want to be capable of getting yourself back home as quickly as possible.

Frequently asked questions

3

Make a Fire

You probably won’t get stranded on an island or lost in the woods, but it’s always helpful to know basic survival skills. If the electricity goes out and you run out of matches, you’ll want to start a fire for warmth. You never know what your future has in store for you, so you might as well learn it all. Just be careful, because it’s never safe to play with fire.

4

CPR

Knowing how to preform cardiopulmonary resuscitation won’t save your life, but it could save someone else’s. You can take a class on how to correctly preform CPR and try the technique on a dummy. If you don’t have the time, you can always look up the steps online. Memorize them, and you might save a life one day.

5

The Heimlich Maneuver

This is another technique that can save a person’s life. All you have to do is stand behind them and press a fist into the person’s abdomen. If someone is choking, you could save them with a simple move. Learn how to do it correctly, and you’ll be thanked.

Rationing

You have to know how much your body needs to survive. If you’re stuck with a limited amount of food and water, you want to eat enough to survive. However, you don’t want to consume so much that you run out of food quickly. It’s important to learn about your body, in case of emergency.

7

Stop Blood

If an event occurs that triggers you to bleed, you need to know how to stop the blood. Of course, you should call an ambulance so that someone with experience can help you. However, while you’re waiting, apply pressure to the wound. You don’t want to lose too much blood and endanger your body. If you can create a splint, even better. The more medical knowledge you have, the better off you’ll be.

If learning a few simple techniques can save your life, you should learn to do them. The time you put in will be well worth it if an emergency arises. Do you know how to do any of the things listed above?

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

In my high school, we learn about all this. I so happy I went to that school.

Apparently now when I do my first aid training at work we aren't allowed to call it that it's now known as Abdominal Thrusts!! The guy who it was named after apparently doesn't want his name to be used to trainers have to say it as AT when they train students!!

It's very important that the Heimlich maneuver is preformed correctly, because you usually only get one try! Once the lungs are empty, there is nothing to help loosen whatever is stuck in the trachea. So if you're not sure and there is someone more qualified close by, it's probably better to let them have a go! And call 911! ;)
