Pre-Sort
One of the best tips for doing laundry I discovered is using a three part hamper or just three different hampers. You place your whites in one hamper, darks in another, and lights in the third. It will save you time sorting on laundry day.
Do a Load Each Day
Speaking of laundry day, make each day laundry day. Doing one load a day is much easier than doing 5 loads on the weekend, when you really just want to chill out. Start a load or your pre-sorted laundry in the morning as you are getting ready to leave for work. As soon as you come home throw the load in the dryer. After dinner when you are watching television, grab the load from the dryer and fold the clothes.
Frequently asked questions
Get Your Family to Help
Don’t let your family off easy. It’s much better to defeat your enemy with an army than on your own. Have your family use the pre-sort hamper. Ask your kids or spouse to put the wash in the dryer when they get home. Even the littlest of kids can help fold simple things like towels or match up socks. If you don’t follow any other tips for laundry at least let others help you out.
Pre-treat Stains
Don’t wait on stains. Rinse and treat the stain as soon as possible and try to get in the wash right away. The sooner a stain is treated the less likely it is to become permanent.
Fold and Hang Warm
The one thing I may hate more than doing laundry is ironing. I avoid ironing like the plagued. I’ve learned this tip from doing laundry the hard way. After countless times of leaving the clothes in the dryer for days only to have wrinkles set in so bad that the clothes either needed to be washed again or ironed out, I now know to fold and hang up my clothes as soon as I hear the dryer stop.

Keep a Clean Laundry Room
Working in a clean space is always important. The same tip for doing laundry applies. If your laundry room is filled with piles of dirty laundry on the floor and a mountain of clean, but unfolded laundry on top of the dryer you aren’t even going to want to step foot in there. Instead, keep the space clean and organized. Keep all your detergents close at hand and keep clothes dirty clothes in hampers and the cleaning ones need to quickly be put away.
And a Clean Closet
Having clean closets is another important tip for doing laundry. I’ll admit that it’s not so much the washing and drying part of doing laundry that is my problem. My downfall comes from putting things away. Once I organized my closet and drawers putting away laundry became so easy it hardly seemed a chore.
Trick Yourself into Thinking Laundry is Fun
If all else fails, try to trick yourself into thinking doing laundry is the best thing ever. Scour pockets for hidden treasure like a pirate, keeping all the goodies for you. Sing fun little songs in your head about laundry and stinky clothes. If that doesn’t work take a heavy whiff of your favorite laundry soap. As much as I hate doing laundry, I absolutely love the smell of laundry detergent.
I hope these tips for doing laundry will help you conquer the laundry monster in your home. You know, if we all join forces we can take this guy out. What are your tips for doing laundry? How do you make this horrible chore easier and more exciting?
