There are lots of great art forms to try if you're looking for something new. They are more than just slapping some paint on a canvas, although painting is a beautiful and relaxing art form to try. New art forms can do more than create a new hobby; they can relax and de-stress you. Art has been an incredible journey for me from high school through my early adult years. I’m looking forward to discovering more art forms to try, and until then here are a few of my top favorites!
Charcoal was one of the first art forms I ever tried. Charcoal pencils are much easier to blend and smudge than regular pencils. I love drawing with charcoal pencils and I’ve discovered that you can make some really pretty and unique effects with them. Just keep a tissue or rag handy for cleaning your fingers!
Looking for a brand new and challenging art form to try? Give sculpting a whirl! You don’t have anything to lose, so why not? You may not be ready to take on intricate or complicated sculptures, but you could probably easily make a bowl or a plate. And painting it afterwards would be a lot of creative fun!
I remember first learning to embroider when I was 6 years old. My grandmother taught me embroidery and my mother taught me cross-stitching. Embroidery requires a bit of concentration, and your skills can get rusty if you don’t practice over the years, but it is a very rewarding hobby! Making beautiful things for yourself or others gives you an accomplished and confident glow.
Who remembers trying papier-mâché in art class during high school? I know I’m not the only one! Papier-mâché is a huge trend right now, and there are a bunch of different things you can make as cute décor for your place or as little gifts for your friends and family. Papier-mâché is also a great art form to try with kids if you have any, or if you find yourself babysitting on a rainy day.
Simple yet incredibly versatile, papier-mâché allows for endless creativity. It's perfect for whipping up everything from small trinkets to large-scale sculptural pieces. Not to mention, it's an eco-friendly option, often using recycled materials. Whether you're creating festive ornaments, quirky vases, or even lampshades, the possibilities are as limitless as your imagination. Plus, the process of tearing up paper, mixing with glue, and molding to form can be incredibly therapeutic. So grab some old newspapers, ready the paste, and dive into the wonderfully messy world of papier-mâché!
Quilting is an art form that I think is so incredible. So much time and labor goes into making a quilt, but you can get very creative and artsy with your design! And if you think about it, there can even be a lot of history or sentiment put into a quilt if you use bits and pieces of blankets or clothing items from various people you know. Bonus: A quilt makes a wonderful baby shower or housewarming gift!
An art form to try that may not occur to many people is food art! We all know that cooking is an art within itself, but so is food presentation. See how creative you can get when preparing and serving food. Food can be made into some really gorgeous centerpieces if you put a little effort into it! Take pictures of your favorite arrangements and cut out magazine clips for inspiration, but soon you will be making up your own designs and layouts.
No matter how little time you have on your hands, or how old you are, you can always learn to play an instrument. Music is such a lovely art! If you don’t feel you can learn an instrument, try to broaden the horizon of music that you listen to. Don’t limit yourself to only one or two types of music. Try different forms and listen to them at various times throughout the day. Different moods can be based on your music choices, or your spirits can be lifted by what you play when you are down!
Whether or not you choose to have a tattoo or a body piercing is entirely your decision. These certainly are unique art forms to try! If that just isn’t your cup of tea, try face painting or hair coloring. Go bold and bright, because you can always wash your colors away at the end of the day. And it’s so much fun to be daring and out of the box for a bit! You can also express yourself through nail polish and makeup, so don’t hold back. Just avoid anything too crazy for professional or solemn occasions such as job interviews or funerals.
If you own your own home or have permission to paint the walls of a rented place, stop choosing boring colors! Break out of your “safe” shell and play with some color. Try some unique styles like stripes, dots, or even an original design. Just be sure not to overwhelm too small of an area with bold prints. My favorite bedroom ever was the one in which I painted my own designs on the wall at 16 years of age.
Art is all about being creative and expressing yourself. DIY is even an art form to try! Delve into some of those projects you have planned to do for a long time and finally check them off your to-do list. This list will give you enough art forms to try to keep you busy for a while.
