1

Perfectionism

This is one of the most common types of procrastination. Perfectionists tend to delay their tasks because the thought of not doing them perfectly is overwhelming and it’s stressing them out. They often put a lot of pressure on themselves and they set a lot of unrealistic goals. Also, once they start doing something, they find it extremely hard to finish it, since they want every detail in place and sometimes, such a thing is just not possible.

2

Daydreaming

I’m not saying being a daydreamer is not a good thing; just don’t let this personality trait affect your productivity. The people from this category often think that it’s more pleasant to think about all kinds of abstract things than focus on the less-interesting, less-attractive stuff at hand. They often find it difficult to plan details and to follow through with a task.

3

Distractions

Some people are extremely easy to distract. When they have to take care of a certain task, they always find something else better to do, something that will offer them immediate gratification, rather than the satisfaction offered by the completion of said task. Their distractions involve video games, TV or even browsing the web.

4

Defiance

Defiers think that the tasks they often postpone are unnecessary or even unfair. They would rather do something else than taking care of them, because they want to maintain control over the situation to retain a sense of individuality. They often tend to respond in a very impulsive manner and they tend to neglect the long-term effects of their actions.

5

Overdoing It

The over-doers find it extremely difficult to get organized, to prioritize and they have difficulties in saying no to other demands. They often take on too much, more than they can handle and then, they procrastinate at one task for the sake of completing other tasks they've taken on. .

Crisis-Making

The procrastinators who do this think that they work best only when they are under pressure and they even enjoy the rush of working under a deadline. They often play competitive sports and they enjoy doing things that will give them an adrenaline rush. They also get bored very easily.

7

Worrying

Worriers are anxious; they avoid doing a lot of things because they seem too risky or even unnecessary. They often prefer staying in their comfort zone, they avoid change and they don’t take on too many challenges. They often doubt their abilities to perform well on certain tasks, and that’s why they put off a lot of things.

8

Listmaking

List-makers are extremely organized, are very meticulous and they easily get absorbed in all the little details of a project. They tend to make a lot of lists, a lot of action plans just to make sure that they don’t miss anything, and this actually gives them the impression that they are working when they are really just postponing things.

9

Delaying

People who delay find it extremely difficult to start working on any task, no matter how important or insignificant it may be. They put things off for a wide variety of reasons: fatigue, self-indulgence, busyness or even misplaced self-regard. They postpone all the things that they have to do for all kinds of reasons and most of those are not even valid.

It’s not easy fighting procrastination, but it’s not an impossible thing to achieve. With a bit of hard work, perseverance and with a lot of patience, I’m sure you’ll manage to get rid of the procrastination bug. Have you ever dealt with procrastination?
