Here are a few ways to use baking soda around the house. Since baking soda is natural, and not very expensive, you are better off buying a box of this stuff to take care of lots of everyday needs around the house instead of buying a different product for each need. Some of these tips have come in very handy for me! Baking soda isn’t just for cooking these days. Read on to learn some of my nifty ways to use baking soda around the house!
One of my favorite ways to use baking soda around the house is for removing odors. I don’t like to use sprays and room deodorizers, as they add lots of allergy-aggravating chemicals into the air. Instead, I use baking soda! Sprinkle it onto carpet and allow it to sit for 30 minutes before vacuuming. Add some to the bottom of your trashcan to keep smells down. Sprinkle it onto your sofa and vacuum up after 30 minutes, or pour down stinky kitchen drains and rinse with hot water!
We’ve all over-baked a cake or two and had stuck-on grime in the bottom of the pan. Instead of soaking with just plain water and soap, and still having to scrub later, use baking soda! Simply fill the pan with water, add 1 tsp. of baking soda, and allow to soak for at least 30 minutes. The offending grime should wipe right off without any extra scrubbing required!
For a little help removing stench, grime, and stains from your clothes, use a little baking soda to boost your laundry detergent power! All you need to do is add ½ a cup of baking soda to the water, then add your soap and proceed as usual. Once your clothes come out, they will be cleaner, fresher, and much softer than if you had washed with just detergent! Baking soda is a great way to strip cloth diapers as well.
Got a nasty sunburn and no aloe vera on hand? All you need is a little baking soda! Add 1 cup to a warm or cool bath, and allow to dissolve. Soak in the tub for at least 15 minutes. Baking soda will help ease the pain and redness. You can always apply a non-perfumed lotion or even some aloe vera gel (if you do have some around) after your bath!
Keep a can of baking soda next to your stove at all times. If a grease fire is accidentally started, you can smother it with baking soda! You never want to use water to smother grease fires, since water can cause the fire to spread. Just throw baking soda onto the flames, and then you should call your maintenance guy or 911 to have an inspection done and make sure no damage was made to your stove or home.
Baking soda makes a great bathroom cleaner! Just put some onto a damp sponge and scrub away at your countertops, tub, and toilet. You can add a dash of vinegar for extra shine and to really cut grease. I like to use this cleaning tip in my kitchen as well, on my countertops, in my sink, and for my microwave!
So you’re getting ready for work and realize you are out of deodorant. Just the thought of having no deodorant may cause you to sweat! Don’t worry; instead just dust a little baking soda under each arm. It will keep sweating and odors at bay until you can get yourself some more deodorant-or who knows? You may find you prefer baking soda to a roll-on or a stick anyways!
As you can see, baking soda has lots of different uses! Once you use it for cleaning, you may be convinced to never buy another cleaning product full of harmful chemicals again. What are some clever uses for baking soda that you know of?
