Don’t Worry What People Think of You

One of the ways to be less socially awkward is to let go of the worry of other people’s opinion. Most of the awkwardness stems from insecurities, so in order to minimize any social impairments that you might have, you have to change your mindset. You have to avoid caring about what others might think of you and instead show your true personality, no matter how different you may be from the norm. Plus the more eccentric and unique you are, the more people will be interested in you.

Fill in the Awkward Silences

When it comes to conversations, it is crucial to keep it flowing. If there are fewer pauses, your whole experience will be more enjoyable. Therefore, fill those awkward silences by bringing up interesting topics that both parties will be able to relate to, and as a last resort, make a few classic jokes here and there.

Develop Your Confidence

When it comes to the social scene, confidence is the key. When you radiate confidence, trust me, others will be able to tell the difference by your body language and the way you carry yourself in general. Therefore, don’t be afraid to be bold and get out there, because it all works out in your favor.

Be Interested in Others

The only way to push awkwardness aside is to establish a good flow of input in a conversation. The only way to ensure that the conversation maintains its natural flow is to show interest in others. Avoid letting your conversation partner do all of the work and instead ask questions that might spark a whole other conversation. This way you will be able to bounce off each other!

Model after Others

One good way to improve your social skills is to learn from others. Observe those who are naturals when it comes to socializing and see how they behave. Take mental notes of what you learn and jump at the next chance to try out these tricks. After all, when you want to learn a particular skill, you want to learn them from the experts!

Understand Social Norms

While I will never discourage someone from being different, there are some social norms that everyone must follow unless you really want to disturb those around you. For example, avoid doing or sayings things that you know will make others uncomfortable. Awkwardness is what we are trying to eliminate here!

Keep Trying

Overcoming social awkwardness is not an easy task. It takes practice and resilience. So don’t give up at the sign of a first failure, because you will see the progress you’ve made with time. And honestly, you’ll be glad you made the change!

Social awkwardness is often the barrier that prevents you from meeting so many great people and getting new opportunities.
