By Alicia • Jun 8, 2014 MD

Standing in the checkout line at the grocery store can often feel tedious and time-consuming. When you are standing in the checkout line at the grocery store doing nothing but waiting, a five-minute delay can easily feel like an eternity. However, with a few intentional habits, you can turn those idle moments into a productive or entertaining mini-break. If you are wondering what to do while waiting in line, here are seven simple, fun things to do while waiting in line to make the time fly by while keeping proper grocery store line etiquette in mind.

1. Get Your Coupons Together

One of the best things to do when waiting in line is to get your digital and physical coupons organized before reaching the register. Getting your coupons together is incredibly helpful to both you and the cashier, saving you from frantically digging through your bag or phone when it is time to pay. Preparing ahead ensures you are ready when it is your turn, and it gives you a moment to double-check expiration dates and discount terms. If you enjoy budget-friendly grocery shopping tips, sorting your savings in line is an easy win. You can also quickly check modern cash-back platforms like Ibotta for instant digital rebates on items in your cart.

You may just discover a new favorite publication while waiting for the conveyor belt to move.

Here are a few popular magazine topics to flip through while waiting:

3. Balance Your Checkbook

Standing in the checkout line is a great opportunity to balance your checkbook or check your recent account transactions. This is usually a quick financial chore that takes only a couple of minutes. You can calculate your running balance or pre-fill your digital ledger entry with your estimated total before scanning your items. Be sure to perform this check carefully so sensitive account details remain private. Taking care of this minor task right away prevents lingering math chores when you return home, which pairs well with our advice on saving money on everyday purchases. Many shoppers now manage their budget on the go using apps like YNAB.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but if you grocery shop regularly, you are bound to be waiting in line; I think this is a well-intentioned light-hearted effort to suggest that you can do a variety of things besides just wasting your time waiting. I agree, I hate it when someone scrutinizes my cart, something I try to avoid at all costs; and I rarely start a conversation in line, only because so many guys in line think this is a perfect place to try to pick you up....not! At the same time, I use this time to check over my list: I always forget something! And I do organize my coupons so the cashier can see I have purchased the correct items. But, for me, the most productive thing to do is meditate, try to relax my brain, try to get back to a more mindful state...some of my best ideas have come to me while trying to relax while waiting in line...

number 5 is a no no. I hate when people look at what's in my cart.
