I’m sure that most of you would agree with me when I say that lately, as a society we have become pretty rude. Somewhere along the way, we forgot our manners and in order to reclaim them, we need to reclaim the courtesy. Manners are important to people for a reason and by reclaiming those manners, we will be happier as a society and as individuals as well. There are a lot of things we can do to improve the way we treat other people and this doesn’t even require so much effort on our behalf. Here are 7 old school manners that we should bring back:
1. Saying “Please” and “Thank You”
Saying “Please” and “Thank You” is not just polite, it’s common sense as well. These simple words can help us remember that we are asking others to make an effort to help you and also, that we really appreciate the things they do for us. Yet, these words have been nearly deleted from the vocabulary of a lot of people, especially of those who don’t work in customer service.
2. Writing Thank You Notes
If you want to thank someone, just keep in mind that a handwritten thank you note expresses more than gratitude, it shows the receiver that you really appreciate their help and that you wanted to do something special to thank them.
3. Remembering to RSVP
Try to never forget to RSVP. Even if you don’t know if you will be able to go to that event, let the organizer know that. They will appreciate your gesture, because when you RSVP, you honor the fact that someone values you enough to invite you to a special event.
4. Holding Doors Open
This is not something that only men should do. Everyone should hold doors open for anyone. The other person will surely be grateful for it. This simple action can change someone’s day and it can put a smile on their face.
5. Give up Your Seat on Public Transport
One of those old manners that people should remember more often is the fact that they should give up their seat on public transport for the elderly, frail or pregnant. This should juts be common decency and not something that would require so much effort on our behalf.
6. Making Proper Introductions
You all know how awkward it is to find yourself in a group conversation where you don’t know anyone. Just keep in mind that if you don’t have enough time to prepare an introduction, just introduce people by name and by their relationship with you.
7. Ask to Leave the Table
This should not only apply to kids who want to leave the table, but to grownups as well. Those simple words “May I Be Excused?” should really make a comeback. It shows respect and consideration for other people’s feelings and it’s one of those old school habits that we should bring back.
A lot of people think that now days most of those manners we lived by in the past are old-fashioned, outdated and unnecessary. Yet, we believe that those manners need to make a comeback since they will help us prosper as a society. Are manners important to you? What manners do you think we should bring back?
