The global beauty industry is huge – estimated to be worth a whopping $532 billion, according to Business Insider in July 2019. For years, people have been willing to invest heavily in products and treatments that will improve the overall appearance and general health of their skin; specifically, their facial skin, for obvious aesthetic reasons.
One such treatment is the facial, which is available in beauty salons and spas around the world. This involves cleansing pores, exfoliating to remove dead skin, treating common problems or concerns with additional products and masks, and massaging to stimulate blood flow and collagen production.
As a direct result of the cannabis industry booming in recent years, specialized facials using cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound naturally produced by the cannabis plant, have risen in popularity and, consequently, become a new trend in skincare globally.

Why Incorporate CBD into a Facial?
CBD’s possible anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, antiemetic, and antibacterial properties, as well as its other potential health benefits, have become increasingly well-known in recent years, although much more research is required in this area to substantiate these claims.
It is available in gummies, capsules, oils, and tinctures, among other forms – it can even be mixed with food and drink. When specifically focusing on its topical use, however, there are certain ways in which it could be beneficial when incorporated into treatments such as facials:
- Research suggests that CBD has antibacterial properties; in one study, it was found to be effective at fighting strains of MRSA that are resistant to traditional, conventional antibiotics. When applied to the skin topically, however, this helps to prevent the breakout of acne, which occurs partly due to a build-up of bacteria on the skin.
- CBD also has potential anti-inflammatory properties that help to fight against breakouts of acne and flare-ups of sensitive skin. It has been shown to soothe and calm red, irritated skin and improve its overall appearance.
- CBD contains antioxidants, which help to reduce visible signs of aging by smoothing wrinkles and evening the overall skin tone.
- CBD has naturally high levels of vitamins A, D, and E, as well as essential fatty acids such as Omega 3 and G. These all promote overall skin health and, consequently, improve its appearance in general. Additionally, both consumers and researchers have found CBD works well as a moisturizing agent.
How do CBD Facials Work?
Cannabidiol interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for maintaining homeostasis (balance) throughout the body. Receptors are found all over the skin and are responsible for controlling the production, survival, and immunity of skin cells. Disruption to this balance is what causes various skin conditions, such as eczema, acne, psoriasis, and dermatitis, among others.
When CBD is applied topically, it immediately interacts with the ECS receptors, which utilize its beneficial properties to restore balance and minimize further disruption. This results in the skin’s better overall appearance and health.

DIY CBD Facials
To incorporate CBD into your facial skincare routine – without breaking the bank – it’s simple to make your own CBD products. Luckily, CBD in oil or tincture form can be mixed easily with lotions, creams, balms, and salves, so you can take your favorite skincare products and add in your own CBD.
There’s a distinct lack of research and information available regarding specific recommended dosages, so you’ll have to make your own estimation. Looking online at various different CBD skincare products on the market, most contain around 100 mg of CBD for every 30 ml of product.
However, there are also many high-potency options that contain double this, if not more. It’s important to remember that you cannot overdose on CBD, so there’s no limit to how much you can add. Therefore, if you suffer from a severe skin condition, there’s no harm in increasing the potency.
Once you’ve made your DIY CBD products, apply them as you usually would during an at-home facial treatment, sit back, and enjoy!
A Word of Warning
The most important thing to take into account when making DIY CBD skin care products is the quality of the active ingredient: CBD. Due to its increasing popularity, there’s a huge amount of products currently available on the market.
Unfortunately, the industry is still loosely regulated, which means it’s largely up to you – the consumer – to ensure that what you’re buying is of a high quality. There are a couple of things to look out for when buying CBD, which we’ve explained below.
Certificates of Analysis and Third-Party Testing
The optimum results will be achieved by using the best-quality product – unfortunately, however, there are a lot of products available that don’t necessarily contain exactly what’s listed on the packaging.
Hemp is a bioaccumulator – meaning that it will absorb substances in the soil in which it is growing. Consequently, if the soil contains pesticides or heavy metals, for example, it’s likely that the end CBD product will too.
You should, therefore, look for companies that utilize third-party testing for unwanted substances – and they should display up-to-date certificates of analysis on their website for consumers to view that prove the product’s purity. This usually increases the end price tag, but it’s worth it to avoid consuming harmful substances.

Full-Spectrum Vs. Isolate CBD
There are generally two types of CBD: full-spectrum CBD and isolate CBD. The former contains all the cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and fatty acids found in the cannabis plant – although it’s worth noting that THC levels have to be below 0.3% for legal purposes. Isolate CBD, on the other hand, is exactly what the name suggests: CBD in its pure form, isolated from all the other compounds in the cannabis plant.
Although isolate CBD tends to be slightly cheaper, it is generally accepted across the industry that full-spectrum CBD has more health benefits and greater therapeutic effects due to what is known as “the entourage effect” – the phenomenon that occurs when all the compounds in the cannabis plant work in synergy to achieve optimum effects. This cannot be experienced by consuming isolate CBD.
