Wondering what young adult fiction books should be on your shelf? Here's a wonderful list by Meenakshi. Thanks Meenakshi!

Reading is an activity that allows you to explore a world within your mind. It creates a movie that only you can indulge in. But the movie depends on how good the script is. One thing I have noticed about the writers of our generation is that they are quite experimental. Sure, we can get tried of hearing about vampires falling in love or a rebel fighting against a dystopian government. But it would be a HUGE lie if I said they were all bad. There are some really good ones out there and it would be a mistake to not read them. Here are my favorite young adult fiction books!

1 It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini

When I first saw this book, I picked it up because I knew that it was a movie. But I didn't know it was going to be this good! Its about 16-year old Craig who unsuccessfully attempts suicide and admits himself to a hospital for help. Throughout the story, Craig learns more and more about life and the story is told in the most amazing way. If you are planning to watch the movie, read the book first. It is way better.

Frequently asked questions

2 Sixteenth Summer by Michelle Dalton

Think of everything a girl wants in a dream relationship: walking on the beach, picnic under the stars, kissing in the rain, and a hunky partner to share it with. This book has it all. The perfect summer romance! Anna is a girl who just can't wait to get out of the small town of Dune Island while Will the cutie is from the great New York. And it's love at first sight. Simply said, this is the perfect romantic novel.

3 The Daughter by Joanna Philbin

Whenever I think about star kids, I think of their lives to be so happy and lucky. Then again, the grass is always greener on the other side. But according to Lizzie and her best friends , it isn't all that. Lizzie, unlike her supermodel model mom, isn't the most good-looking person and prefers writing over strutting. But suddenly, a photographer sees something in her and she is on the verge of being this huge thing. What I love about this book is the characters actually feel so real. A book that is too good and is a must read.

4 I'll Be There by Holly Goldberg Sloan

Domestic abuse is a cruel truth that tends to happen in our society. Sam, seventeen, and his brother Riddle, twelve, are children of a drunk and abusive criminal-on-the-run who has kidnapped his kids from their mother. Sam and Riddle were forbidden to make any contact with the outside world, that way Clarence (the father) won't be caught. But when Sam meets Emily, he can't help but fall in love and take the risk to meet her (along with Riddle on his side) behind Clarence's back. This story will capture your soul and pull your heart strings. This book defines realistic fiction as it talks about what a kid has to go through with an abusive parent. I wish I had read this sooner because this is one book that will get you to believe in the wonders of life. The message: Hope exists, you just have to let it take its course.......

5 Blood Red Road by Moira Young

Honestly speaking, I don't like sci-fi books. I prefer either realistic or historical fiction. When one of my teacher's recommended Blood Red Road, I was kind of iffy on whether I wanted to read it or not. But I read it anyway because I had nothing else. After I finished, I ended up reading it four more times! It's about Saba and her journey to get back her twin brother, Lugh, after he gets taken away by the evil leader. It has action, drama, suspense, and romance. It's the total package! The characters feel and change rather than just staying as names on pieces of paper. Disclaimer though: The book is written quite differently. There are no quotation marks when a character is talking and some of the words are spelled differently. For example, just is spelled jest or have to is spelled hafta (these are just some of them). But after a couple of pages you get used to them so it won't be a problem. Go to the nearest library, book store, or shop online. Read it ASAP so you can read the next in the series: Rebel Heart.

6 Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys

Do not confuse this book for 50 Shades of Grey!!! No unit of measurement can describe the difference between these two books. Between Shades of Gray is about a girl, Lina, who is a Lithuanian teenager during 1941. Her mother, brother and herself are separated from their father by Soviet Officers who ship them of (with other residents of the Baltic Region) to Siberia to essentially be laborers . Not having any freedom at all, Lina expresses herself through drawings that she keeps to herself. The saddest part of this story is that the setting this book was in was true. During the time of Stalin and his communist ruling, the Baltic countries were secretly taken being labeled as thieves and prostitutes and were either sold to be slaves or shipped of to Siberia. This book made me weep in my bed. I just feel so horrible for these people who were being treated like this but there experience wasn't as well known as the Holocaust or Japanese American Concentration Camps. Not only was the story good, but it was written so beautifully and well.

7 Amy and Roger's Epic Detour

Amy's life is not exactly going as planned. Her father recently died and she blames herself for it. So to start fresh, Amy's mom decides to move across the country. To get there she must go on a road trip from California to Connecticut with Will, her mom's friends son. This is the most cutest story! Being someone who loves road trips, I enjoyed this book much more. But I definitely like the way how she made an ordinary thing like road trips into this adorable story about love, life, and memories.

8 Just One Wish

Annika loves her brother with her whole heart. Unfortunately her brother has cancer. He wishes to meet his idol, Teen Robin Hood, who is played by hottie Steve. So to make sure Jeremy gets his wish before his surgery, Annika sneaks off to Hollywood to get Teen Robin Hood to come home with her to Jeremy. This book was actually recommended to me by someone and I got so attached to the book within the first chapter. It is such a feel good story that just captures you heart. And it is hilarious. I found myself giggling time to time. You will not regret reading this book.

9 Animal Farm

This book was assigned to me for school and it really is a good book. Although sometimes when you are assigned to read a book, you can't enjoy it as much as you should. But the story is truly a good one. Basically it is the story of the Soviet Union time era set in a farm with evil pigs. Sounds kind of stupid but is exactly opposite. No fictional book will inform you as much as this one. It tricks you into learning! One way to make it like a game, try to connect characters with events and people with history. Makes the story really interesting.

10 The Fault in Our Stars

Hazel, now sixteen, was diagnosed with cancer since thirteen and enters a support group for people with cancer. Then she meets the hero, Augustus, and things change. I am going to admit something, I haven't actually read the book. I know, I know, I'm just as disappointed in myself too. I have wanted to read this book for so long because John Green is just a genius. If I could, I would marry this guy! But so many of my friends love this book and I'm sure you will too!

11 The Boy Who Dared

This one is about Helmuth, who is a German boy during the infamous Holocaust. The book is told from his perspective from a toddler to a sixteen year old. This book is a fictional story about a real boy who rebelled against the government about the discrimination that Jewish, and other different people, experienced. What I thought was special about his book was the perspective it was written in. When there is a book written about the Holocaust, it is usually in the perspective of a Jewish victim. This one was about a teenager who had everything (compared to a Holocaust victim) but yet fought for the freedom of people he really didn't know. Not only did this author write a good book, but the character inspired me.

These are some of my favorite books. I love reading books because it takes me to a world of my own. But I would love to hear books that you guys like, what you guys feel about the books that I wrote about, etc. Go on, leave a comment!
