Starting a new job is always scary, so you may be in need of some tips for a good first day at work. It seems like, no matter how many times you do it, or how old/young you are, it doesn't get any less scary walking into a big, new office on your first day. I know, I've only just had one. So if you're feeling nervous, here are some tips for a good first day at work.
This may seem like an obvious one for the tips for a good first day at work, but it's one that you can easily forget if you're nervous and just hoping to blend in. Also, not everyone is always going to come up and introduce themselves to you. In fact, they may even ignore you at first because they’re busy working. Walk in, look happy and smile. When you meet someone new, tell them it's your first day and introduce yourself.
Let’s face it - we all want to make a good impression on our first days. If you notice that every now and again, someone gets up and asks if anyone wants tea, coffee etc, take the lead. When everyone's looking a bit thirsty again, get up and offer to take your turn. You'll start to fit in in no time.
If you think there's anything you need to know before you start, prepare for it! This is obviously even more essential if you've actually been asked to do it, but if you haven't - but you know that you're going to be working on a specific project etc - do a little bit of research in advance. That way, you won't feel so much of a newbie.
First days can be stressful. Especially if it hasn't gone exactly as you wanted it to, and you've been there a little while and you're just feeling a little lost. Don't let it get to you - the most important thing you can have on a first day is a pleasant, positive attitude. It'll endear people to you much faster.
There's nothing worse than a mad morning rush and the fear that you're going to be late on your first day. Plan ahead the night before - check the dress code of where you're working, choose an outfit accordingly and get it all ready for the morning. Then get up in plenty of time to get ready!
One of the worst things you can do on your first day is get involved in office gossip. Most offices have it - some people will like each other, some people won't - that's life. But if you hear it starting up around you, keep quiet. Or, if someone tries to gossip directly to you, swiftly change the subject. Getting a reputation as a gossip is not the best way to start a new job.
This is the most important one on the list. If you're unsure of something, ask! No one can expect you to know everything right away, it's your first day. They'll be expecting you to ask questions and it’s so much easier than struggling on your own.
Remember, be pleased with yourself - you've got this job, and you wouldn't have done that if you didn't deserve it and they didn't think you could do it. A first day may be stressful, but try to take some enjoyment out of it as well. So, what are your tips? What made your first days go swimmingly?
