Nowadays it’s pretty hard to find a job, due to all those economic problems everyone has to face, and that’s why you should pay enough attention to all those little details that might prevent you from getting that dream job. A lot of people think that they have to include in their resume every single job they had or every little detail about their work experience or even about their lives, but sometimes irrelevant information might make recruiters reject your resume despite all your good intentions. Here are a few things to never put on your resume if you don’t want them to hinder your chance of getting an interview:
While in other countries, recruiters do require a photograph with each resume, in the US, this is among the things to never put on your resume. After all, your appearance has nothing to do with your abilities and it should not influence whether or not you’ll be getting a job interview. Also, most times, a photo might take up some valuable space on your resume, space that you might use to promote your key skills, because in fact, these are the things that will truly land you that job.
You are not going to impress your potential employer by mentioning every little job you ever had, especially if they are not relevant in that situation. A resume should be short, well-written and to-the-point. On the other hand, if you don’t really have too much job experience, experts say that “you can include slightly unrelated positions as long as you demonstrate how they prepared you for a job in your new field.”
Most employers are not exactly thrilled about finding out about your hobbies from reading your resume. The space on your resume should be used in the best possible way in order to show the recruiters that you are the perfect candidate for their job. However, if one of your hobbies is related to that company, or to what they are doing, make sure you mention it in your resume so you’ll get your potential employer’s attention.
I’m sure you all know you should never lie on your resume because those lies can be very easily spotted by every recruiter. Make sure that all the information in your resume is always 100% accurate because the lies you might be tempted to add are very easy to verify. Institutions internationally usually offer all kinds of information to a lot of recruiters as public records and also, a lot of companies will freely give details about your former position to whoever asks about it. So, that’s why it’s always best to be honest about everything, especially when writing your resume, so nothing will damage your career.
You resume should not include any personal information beyond your address, your phone number or your e-mail address. These are all necessary so they could contact you if they decide to call you for an interview. Just leave out things like race, sexual orientation, marital status, religious beliefs, political views or how many children you have. All these things have nothing to do with your skills or with your ability to do that job, so why waste precious space on your resume by including them? It’s best to simply leave them out.
Just like photographs, you don’t need to include in your resume any details regarding your physical characteristics. This kind of information is not relevant to them, so it’s best to leave it out. There are also a few exceptions for which certain physical attributes are a requirement in order to get that job, and here I’m talking about models or security guards. Experts say that “in legal terms, this is known as a bona fide occupational qualification (BFOQ) and if the employer specifically asks for this information because of a BFOQ, you should provide it.”
This is another very important thing you should never include in your resume if you are trying to get that job you’ve always dreamed about. The salary is often negotiated during the interview and usually after you’ve been offered the job. So, try not to hurry and spoil your chances of getting a bigger paycheck by including your salary history in your resume. This information is also irrelevant and it could really harm your salary negotiation later on.
