Starting college is one of the biggest milestones that you experience in your life, so you want to go in armed with absolutely everything you need to have the best and most successful time possible. You have put in so much effort to get there, so you owe it to yourself to start on the right foot! Here are some of the key things you need to be successful in college.
Owning and using a journal/planner is one of the most important things to help you to get into the swing of a college schedule. You have more deadlines, classes, events and appointments than ever before, so having everything physically written down in a planner is an easy and effective way to make sure that you stay on top of your new lifestyle and routine.
We all have a computer or laptop at home, but it can also be really helpful to have a tablet that you can take with you to classes without taking up a lot of room both in your bag or in the classroom. It’s good to have a way to access the internet and your emails etc. whilst in class and on the go.
Getting good quality sleep is essential during your college years because you need proper rest and restoration in order to produce your best work. A really sturdy and comfortable mattress is the way to go, something that supports your back and allows you to drift off in peace for a solid eight hours per night.
If you are serious about succeeding in college, you need to surround yourself with a group of people who share the same ethics, values and opinions as you do. Having a close-knit set of college pals is really important because everything is always easier when there are people around who are on the same path as you and want you to do well.
Alongside your good friendships should also be a good study group. Get together with a few other people in your various classes and make the commitment to work together outside of the classroom at least once a week. It helps to keep you on track with your workload.
College can be a time when it is tempting to eat a lot of junk and snacks, but try to keep on a healthy track and maintain a balanced and moderation based diet. There is always room to treat yourself, but brain food is an important thing to remember: lots of protein and omega 3 fatty acids.
You are never going to be able to succeed in your college journey if you don’t go in to things with a positive and good attitude. There will be good times and there will be bad times, but the trick is to just keep swimming, like Dory says!
