5 Hilariously Irrational Social Media Fears We All Share
Sending the Wrong Snapchat • 'Liking' While Creeping • Accidental Follows • Making a Typo • Seeing Your Crush on a Dating App • More ...
There are a lot of things in this world that people are understandably afraid of (heights, snakes, bugs, etc.). But, if you're an avid social media user (guilty), these totally irrational fears run through your head on a daily basis. Just a few examples include:
- Sending a message to the wrong person
- Double-tapping an old photo
- Following someone by mistake
Seriously, I don't use the term 'fear' lightly. Social media users are terrified of having this happen to them, LOL!
1. Sending the Wrong Snapchat
I can't even begin to tell you how often I double-check the names on my contacts list before pressing 'send' on Snapchat. Being attentive has saved me from a lot of potentially embarrassing situations. I mean, who wants to send their "super ugly face that's only intended for my best friend" shot to the guy they're crushing on? No one. No one at all. 2. 'Liking' While Creeping
Do you ever just creep on somebody's Instagram or Facebook page and go through all their photos? Same. Have you ever liked a photo they posted 6 months ago? Yeah, same. *Cringes* It's not on purpose though, I swear! It's just that the touch screens on these phones make it so easy to accidentally like or double-tap something. To avoid this, some of us could probably use a few digital detox strategies.
3. Accidental Follows
With X (formerly Twitter) constantly changing its layout, it's become so easy to accidentally follow someone. When someone new appears on your timeline (due to a follower's retweet or whatever the case might be) the follow button is right next to their name. You could be scrolling down your phone and accidentally tap that 'follow' sign! Awkward.
4. Making a Typo
Am I the only one who feels the need to delete a post with a typo and repost it with the correct grammar? It has nothing to do with other people seeing it; I just can't stand to see it on my profile! The worst is when you don't catch the typo and somebody else calls you out on it. Trust me, one of your followers will act like the grammar cop and demand you fix it.
Here is a quick breakdown of common typos and their reactions:
| Typo Type | Severity | Typical Reaction |
|---|
| Your vs. You're | High | Immediate correction by followers |
| Their vs. There | Medium | A few polite DMs |
| Fat-finger typos | Low | Usually ignored |
5. Seeing Your Crush on a Dating App
If you have Tinder, OkCupid, or any other dating app on your phone, one of the worst things would be to see your crush on it too. I mean, what does he think about you being on Tinder? Did he swipe left while you swiped right? Now what? For more on navigating this tricky terrain, read up on our tips for online dating success.
