7 of the Scariest Survival Horror Games for PS to Be Released Soon ...

If you’re in the mood to turn out all the lights and scare yourself silly with survival horror games for PS3 and PS4, then I have some good news! There are loads of great survival horror games for PS3 and PS4 being released in the run-up to Christmas (and early next year), so there’s plenty for fans of the genre to look forward to. Here are 7 of the scariest releases that I personally can’t wait for!

1 The Evil within

You just know that this game is going to be something special – after all, it’s by Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil. Set in a mental asylum, you play a detective, with the starting scenes of the game seeing you running unarmed through dark corridors as you’re chased by a chainsaw-wielding maniac. That’s as much as I’m giving away for now, but this is set to be one of the most exciting survival horror games for PS3 of 2014 – the release date is still to be confirmed!

Frequently asked questions

2 Dying Light

This game has garnered comparisons to Dead Island, which I personally wasn’t a fan of. But with free running and zombies in the same game, it would be rude not to at least give it a go! This first-person survival horror game is set in a huge open world, and there isn’t much information about it yet available online. The trailer looks stunning though, and I can’t wait to give it a go!

3 Beyond: Two Souls

Whilst it’s not technically a survival horror (maybe to some people) – I guess it’s more of a mystery/thriller – it still deserves a place in this list! You play Jodie (voiced by Ellen Page), who has spent her whole life feeling connected to a mysterious entity that follows her throughout life. The supernatural element of this game makes it look really creepy, and it’s at the top of my wishlist when it’s released in the UK this October!

4 Until Dawn

It’s survival horror, but not as you know it, and it’s sure to be fun to play, thanks to the unique use of the PlayStation Move as a flashlight! You’re camping with friends in the mountains – something goes horribly wrong. This has all the promises of a great slasher flick in game format, and if it’s well executed, it could be a brilliant and visually appealing game – I’m definitely excited to see how it plays out.

5 Outlast

Out now for PC and soon to be released for PS4, this game is about as scary as they get! Once again, it’s set in a mental asylum, but here the similarities to other games end. One of the scariest aspects of this new game is that there are no weapons – you start armed with a flashlight, and don’t expect weapons to appear later on in the game. It’s just you, running down spooky dark corridors and being chased by shadows. This game has received some rave reviews from grown men who were scared playing it, so I’m really looking forward to its release!

6 Rain

This isn’t strictly a survival horror, although it has spooky elements, hence its inclusion in this list! Exclusive to the PS3 on digital download, this title sees you investigate a mysterious world hidden in the rain. To give much more away about the plot would be spoiling it, but you’ll play a boy trying to save a little girl from ghostly creatures. If anyone remembers ICO, this has similarities in the plot (although not the graphics), and it looks like an intriguing, mysterious addition to the genre for PS3.

7 Daylight

If there’s one survival horror game that makes me want a PS4, it’s Daylight. Again, the setting is an abandoned asylum, but it’s a totally different game to Outlast. Indie developer Zombie Studios have used ‘procedurally generated environments,’ which basically means that no two experiences of the game are ever the same – so there’s something to make you jump around every corner, no matter how many times you’ve played before! This is due for an early 2014 release and will also be available on PC.

Whether you play with all the lights turned on and your boyfriend nearby for moral support or settle down in the darkness and prepare to brave these games yourself, at least one game on this list is sure to scare the living daylights out of you! There’s something so immersive about survival horror – it’s like actually being in a horror film, which is what gives it its unique appeal. There are loads of great survival horror games – have you played any good ones recently?
