10 Most Coveted Status Symbols of 2012 ...

I happened upon this survey the other day and just had to share it with you all. We are all pretty materialistic at heart (she doth protest too much), and we have various ways in which we judge ourselves and others. Status symbols, accordingly, take many forms. DeLonghi, the home appliance maker commissioned a survey to find the top 10 most coveted status symbols of 2012. The following products are what 20,000 people think gives them social status that demonstrates their wealth, success and inspirational habits - a heavy emphasis on what they “think” gives them status. Nonetheless, these symbols exist every year with new technology, accessories and gadgets being produced regularly. So read on for the 10 Most Coveted Status Symbols of 2012 with the Top 5 for men and 5 for women listed, according to the survey.

1

Walk-in Wardrobe (45%)

To be fair, a walk-in wardrobe would be pretty cool, but only if you’ve got enough clothes to make one worthwhile. It appears women want to feel like Carrie Bradshaw and have the luxury of entering their own walk-in wardrobe to professionally display their outfits and clothes, feeling like a star. Just in case the clothes themselves don’t do the job.

2

U.S.-style Fridge (38%)

U.S.-style fridges, the sleek double door with its own ice and water dispenser is a status symbol many people are investing in nowadays. (Outside of America – big fridges used to be very uncommon). They have a trough-load of storage space and little compartments that make accessing your milk that little bit easier. What’s more, the dispenser that produces fridge-cold water at the rate equivalent to a man emptying his bladder is so incredibly useful, if you can’t be bothered to walk 2 metres to the tap.

3

Hot Tub (37%)

If you want your neighbors and friends to notice all of the money you have, get a hot tub. Getting a Jacuzzi is apparently one of the most effective status symbols of 2012, because it shows you have the money to buy one AND the time to enjoy it. Sitting around in a Jacuzzi with a glass of champagne is the optimum shout-out to the world that you’re so middle-class.

4

Range Cooker (24%)

Move over Aga, range cookers are all the rage for the successful. I find it confusing and incongruous that women who have fought hard for emancipation and equality, are choosing home appliances as status symbols. Range cookers have at least two ovens and typically more than six hobs. These are particularly useful for big families or very greedy people. Or for people who like to think they have a restaurant in their own home.

5

Noise-activated Lights and Blinds (21%)

I’m sorry, what? Noise-activated lights and blinds? How utterly weird can you be, wanting to talk to your light bulbs? I guess this is for ladies who want to feel futuristic and like Tony Stark’s girlfriend. Shouting “on!”, “off!”, “off…”, “oh for goodness sake’s OFF!!” means that when a family or partner aren’t there to boss about and tell them what to do, ordering your household appliances around is the next big step to success.

Music Speakers in Every Room (34%)

Men have always loved huge speakers, with a pumpin’ sub-woofah and surround sound. It’s to give them the ultimate home-cinema experience, and so it’s because of these people why going to the cinema nowadays requires taking out a second mortgage.

2

Hot Tub (32%)

The hot tub’s appeared again! It seems that this is a much coveted status symbol shared by anyone rich enough to afford it. Now we know that there’s at least one of these coveted status symbols a couple can agree on.

3

3D TV (31%)

3D has attempted to become all the rage in 2012. It has sort of worked. With new 2D cinema releases having a 3D companion, 3D available on television and even in live shows, there’s no wonder people want to invest in a 3D TV. My question is, where’s the line between actually wanting a 3D TV because of its sea-sickness effect in your own living room, and the fact it’s just another status symbol?

4

U.S.-style Fridge (27%)

Again men and women are agreeing. What does it say about men who are choosing white goods over fast cars as status symbols? Hmmm! This has appeared again because, to be fair, it’s pretty handy. But I still can’t help but need to go to the toilet after I get water that shoots out of a tiny hole….

5

Noise-activated Lights and Blinds (24%)

It seems that noise-activated lights and blinds are really a popular status symbol of 2012. Men can feel like Tony Stark as they enter a room and impress a lady friend by ordering their appliances to turn on and off by using just their voice. I guess it’s a lot cooler than those lights that turn on and off by clapping. But then it’s also extremely lame when the lights go out when you’ve just told the dog to get “OFF” the sofa.

Just for your edification- numbers 6-10 in the symbols of success for women were 3DTV (19%), coffee machine (8%), temperature-controlled wine cabinet (7%), Free standing food mixer (6%) and gas barbecue.

For men 6-10 was walk-in wardrobe (21%), range cooker (15%), coffee machine (9%), temperature controlled wine cabinet (8%), recycling compactor (7%).

It is pretty obvious that Delonghi provided the survey respondents with a list they had to rank! Just how realistic these 10 of the most coveted status symbols of 2012 are, only you can decide.

Apparently if you have any of these gadgets, you’ve made it. But for people who live in a world where being on top of the social hierarchy in your suburban town isn’t a priority, the true indicator to ‘making it’ is if you actually want, use, and enjoy your home. Do you own any of these products? Which of these 10 Most Coveted Status Symbols of 2012 do you want, and why? I’d love to hear from you.
