January 11 ... on This Day ...

By Neecey

On this date in 2016 we woke to news that David Bowie died the day previously.

The musician’s son, Duncan Jones, announced "David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer."

Born David Jones, January 8, 1947 in London he was rightfully called a music legend. His style was totally unique: he was a singer, musician, artist, actor… star!

In the 60s he wowed us with Space Oddity, in the 70s he gave us his alter egos of Ziggy Stardust and Alladin Sane and was more glam than glam rock with hits like Jean Jeanie and Life on Mars. In the 80s he had huge hits with Ashes to Ashes and China Girl. He dueted with Mick Jagger on Dancing in the Streets to help the Live Aid project. In the 90s he became the Thin White Duke and recorded with his band Tin Machine. And since then, he worked on numerous studio albums and live performances. His final album – Blackstar - was released on Friday, on his birthday.

And let’s not forget his acting performances in movies The Man Who Fell to Earth, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Labyrinth, Cat People, The Hunger, The Prestige and as The Elephant Man on stage.

The BBC site said “David Bowie was the Picasso of pop. He was an innovative, visionary, restless artist: the ultimate ever-changing postmodernist.”

David Bowie was a musician’s musician. Many of today’s biggest names in music cite him as a major influence: Kanye West, Madonna and Pharrell Williams were among the first to pay tribute.

I haven’t done his incredible career and talent justice here so let’s just close with RIP David. Music will miss you.
