Whether you’re looking to ease a cold or perk up dry, tired-looking skin, there’s a home remedy using lemons that can do just that, and more. Here are 8 home remedies using lemons… the next time you’re at the grocery store or produce stand, grab a few lemons, review this list, and solve a few health and beauty problems… and then make lemonade!
1. Soothe a Cough
If you think tea is the final word in soothing a cough, think again… sort of. Take that cup of tea and add a little honey and lemon, and it will soothe a sore throat and ease a cough even better. It also tastes heavenly, something most home remedies lack. This works particularly well with chamomile tea, by the way…
2. Lighten Freckles and Age Spots
If you have age spots or freckles, lighten them with this home remedy using lemon. Mix together a thick paste of sugar, lemon juice, and a little lemon zest (rind). Apply to your face, or the backs of your hands, or wherever you have the age spots or freckles. Massage gently to exfoliate a little, then allow to dry a bit (about 10 minutes). Rinse away with warm water, then repeat once a day til your freckles have faded.
3. Clear up Acne
This is one of my favorite home remedies using lemons, and I first heard about it from Dr. Oz. All you need is about 8 crushed-up uncoated aspirins and about a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice. Mix the two together until you have a smooth paste, then apply in a thin layer on your acne-prone areas. Leave the mask on for about 10 minutes, then rinse away with warm water. Pat to dry. You’ll notice a little tingling and maybe even a little redness from the salicylic acid (the aspirin), but it’ll fade in just a few minutes. Hello clear, healthy-looking skin!
4. Add Subtle Highlights
I love this home remedy using lemons… it’s so easy, and it’s so much less expensive than salon highlights! To add subtle highlights, braid your hair back, then spritz your hair with a 50/50 blend of lemon juice and water. After spending a day in the sun, you’ll notice some very pretty, very subtle new highlights.
5. Exfoliate Dull Skin
Another face mask, another home remedy using lemons! This one perks up dry, dull skin by sloughing away dead skin. In a blender, pulse about ½ cup of uncooked natural oats, then bit by bit, add lemon juice to make a smooth, thick paste. Apply to your face, and allow to dry. This will take about 10 minutes (long enough to read a chapter of 50 Shades of Grey). Rinse with cool water, then pat gently to dry. Wow, your skin looks terrific!
6. Soothe a Sore Throat
Have a sore, itchy, irritated throat? Gargle with this magic tonic, and you’ll feel better! Stir one teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water, then add about ½ cup of fresh lemon juice. Gargle with the solution, but don’t swallow it… there! Do you feel a little better now?
7. Brighten Skin
We’ve talked about other masks and such for various skin problems, but did you know you can lighten and brighten the skin on your elbows and knees by simply rubbing them with half a lemon? It’s true! Just make sure you don’t have any small cuts or abrasions before you try this… ouch!
8. Cheer up!
Research has shown that the scent of citrus can perk you up, improve your mood, and even stimulate your mind… all that, just from the scent of lemons! Make your own lemon-scented pick-me-up by adding a few drops of lemon juice to your tea, bottled water, and more.
Who knew the humble little lemon could do all that? I love the all the scrubs and masks, and of course, the subtle highlights… which of these home remedies using lemon do you like best, and why? Or do you have another citrusy problem-solving solution you’d like to share?
