I bet there are a lot of cute and funny animals you’ve never heard of! Apparently, there are 1,367,555 non-insect animal species (and this number represents only 1% of all animal species that ever lived on the face of Earth!) that are identified today, so you can’t possibly know all of them, even if you are a quite passionate animal enthusiast. There are a lot of wonderful little creatures that will surely impress and amaze you. Scientists discover new species every day and they also admit that they are not yet familiar with all existing animals. Here are 9 of the cutest animals you’ve never heard of that will surely leave you speechless:
In my opinion, this is definitely one of the strangest and most beautiful animals I’ve ever seen! Well, I do love fish a lot, so I just had to include this wonderful specimen on this list of animals you’ve never heard of. It can be found in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, especially on coral reefs in shallow waters. They average 30-75 cm in length and 80% of their time they are looking for food. They develop a large beak (here’s the parrot resemblance) that is used for scrapping algae and small organisms from rocks.
This wonderful little thing originated in Australia and it resembles a mouse-sized flying squirrel because it has the ability to glide through air. It prefers sugary nectarous foods (and here is where their name comes from), it’s nocturnal and it’s definitely one of the cutest animals I’ve ever seen!
This little cute guy is also known as the sea swallow, blue angel or blue dragon and is actually a species of small-sized blue sea slug. You can find it in the warm waters of the oceans, in temperate and tropical waters, and it usually floats on the surface thanks to a gas-filled sac in its stomach. At maturity, it can be up to 3 cm and it’s one of the most fascinating and interesting little creatures I’ve ever seen.
This extremely cute mammal is most known for not having a dorsal fin. It can be found in the cool waters of the southern hemisphere. They are fast active swimmers and they are usually found in large herds of dolphins ranging from 100 to 200 individuals, but they have also been found in groups as large as 3000 dolphins. They are very graceful; they have a streamlined body, a short, well-defined beak, no visible teeth and a single blowhole.
This little cute guy is part of a species of rodent, it can be found in China and Mongolia and it lives in temperate grasslands and temperate deserts. When they are chased, they can run at up to 24 kilometers per hour and they also have excellent hearing. They are nocturnal and during the day, they shelter in burrows. I bet most of you didn’t know this cute guy actually exists, I know I didn’t until a while ago when one of my friends told me about it.
This beautiful little guy is also called the red crested soft-furred spiny-rat or Santa Marta toro. It’s a rodent that lives in humid montane forests and it’s about the size of a guinea pig. This species has been listed as Critically Endangered and I do hope that it won’t go extinct. It’s such a cute little guy! Apparently, it reappeared after 113 years and this is quite impressive, so we should do everything in our power to protect it.
This is a small species of deer characterized by “a prominent tuft of black hair on its forehead and fang-like canines for the males.” They can be found in China and they are mainly solitary creatures, yet sometimes they can be found in pairs, but they are very shy. It is not considered to be endangered even though it suffers from over-hunting and habitat loss.
This is a relatively large rodent that it is also known as the Patagonian cavy, Patagonian hare or dillaby. It can be found in open and semi-open habitats in Argentina, it resembles a jackrabbit, it’s monogamous and it prefers to live in habitats with lots of shrub cover. It’s herbivorous and it’s considered to be a near-threatened species since it has been greatly affected by hunting and habitat alteration.
This is a passerine bird of the tyrant flycatcher family, it is usually found in forests and woodland throughout most of the Amazon basin, it is about 6 inches and it eats mostly insects. It has a spectacular but rarely seen crest that is usually left flat, but when raised it has a remarkable combination of scarlet, black and blue (yellow replaces red in female).
These are in my opinion 9 of the cutest animals I’ve never heard of. I’m sure there are many more I could add to this list, so could you give me a hand and tell me what other rare animals you know? Please tell us about them in the comments section!
