On those days when you want to stay away from technology and spend time with friends or family, card games definitely come in handy. Recently, a group of my friends and I went away together on a trip upstate and during those three days, playing cards was our main source of entertainment. And we actually had a blast! You would be surprised just how many card games you can play with one stack of cards.
Mafia is one of those card games that are perfect for large groups. It’s a party game that gets everyone involved by giving each person a role of a moderator, detective, doctor, cupid, mafia or townsperson. The game is usually played through the rounds of day and night, and the goal of mafia members is to kill off the townspeople while for the rest is to weed out the mafia members. Once everyone learns how to play the game, that’s when all the fun begins!
2. Go Fish
Most of your probably already know how to play ‘Go Fish’ but for those who never heard of the game, I’ll make it short and sweet. In a nutshell, the players ask each other for cards and if you don’t have what they are looking for, you tell them to ‘go fish’. There are more details to this game but it is very easy to get the hang of.
Spoons is like musical chairs but with playing cards. You basically have to quickly pass cards around the table with spoons, one fewer than there are players in front of you until one of you gets four of a kind with spoons. Once that happens, each player has to grab a spoon and the one left without one gets a letter. The person who spells out SPOON first loses the game.
4. Old Maid
Old Maid is another one of my childhood favorite games. It consists of players pulling cards from each other’s hands to try to make pairs. However the one left with the unmatchable Old Maid card loses the game. It’s a family-friendly game that can be played in big groups!
B.S or also known as I Doubt It is another exciting game that will definitely rile up some emotions from the players. The game is played with all cards faced down, each person sets one card down at a time and calls out what they are playing but if you don’t believe what they are saying, you can call them out! If you are right they take the pile of cards, the person with the most cards loses.
Slapjack is one of the more intense card games that require a lot of concentration and speed. It’s a simple game in which each players starts with a deck of cards and begins to place the top card of his stack onto the middle. As cards begin to stack up, the goal is to spot the Jack and slap the pile before anyone else. The person with the most cards wins!
7. Basic Poker
You can never go wrong with the basic poker! All you need is a stack of cards and chips to bet with. There are many details to the game, so it might take a while for beginners to learn but once everyone understands the rules, the game can get intense and interesting really quickly!
You will be surprised just how much entertainment one stack of playing cards can bring. The amount of magic tricks and card games is limitless! What is your favorite card game to play to pass time?
