7 Amazing Essential Oils to Help You through the Holiday Season ...

'Tis the season to do everything to excess and suffer the consequences it seems, but there are some amazing essential oils to help you through the festive season and to also help you deal with the stresses and strains of the holidays. Yes, Christmas is a great time when families and friends gather to deck the halls and jingle their bells but when it all gets a little too much, I love using essential oils and there are many ways they can be used. Mixed with carrier oils, they can be used for massages. They can be sprinkled in baths and also used as a room spray by mixing 15-20 drops of essential oil in 250 ml of water in a plant spray. Simply shake the bottle well and fragrance your room with a number of scents and let aromatherapy waft your troubles away! Do remember that essential oils shouldn't be taken internally although some antiseptic oils such as tea tree, sage and thyme, are great for the natural treatment of sore throats. Just mix two drops of either of these oils with half a glass of water to make a great gargle which will relieve those sore throat symptoms. Here are some more of my favourite amazing essential oils that I like to use, not just during the holiday season but all year round.

1 Frankincense

Frankincense We all know that this essence is associated with the nativity, with one of the Three Wise Men bestowing a gift of Frankincense upon the baby Jesus. And how thoughtful, as this woody and spicy essence has so many healing benefits. Research has shown it to help with the pain and stiffness of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and to also improve asthma. It is also reported to have helped in the management of symptoms of those suffering from inflammatory bowel disease. But if you're not unfortunate enough to suffer from any of these ailments you can still benefit from the elevating and soothing effect this aroma has on the emotions, as it instils peace and calm in all those who use it. It really helps to alleviate anxiety and lift your mood. So when things are getting a little too much over the holiday season, as it sometimes does, sprinkle a few drops on a handkerchief and inhale. It's one of the most amazing essential oils to use.

Frequently asked questions

2 Lavender

Lavender Lavender is another great stress relieving aroma and when I'm finding it difficult to sleep, I sprinkle a few drops on my pillow as it has a calming and balancing effect. But it also has many other benefits which may help you during the festive season. At this time of year, people tend to over indulge and this causes many unpleasant side effects such as flatulence, indigestion, nausea and sometimes vomiting. Lavender is great for digestive disorders and also as protection against colds and flu.

3 Rose

Rose Rose is my favorite aroma and essential oil. Perhaps it's because I have a little bit of it in my name! It's a beautifully balancing, uplifting and rejuvenating essential oil that will help when things get a little too much over the festive season and it also helps women stay positive. So it's an all-year-round essential oil really!

4 Myrrh

Myrrh Another familiar essential oil which has associations with the Christian nativity is myrrh, which is another great aroma for digestive health and in particular, helps relieve flatulence. So it's another wonderful essential oil to soothe away the symptoms of festive excess we will all probably be suffering from. Myrrh and tea tree are also a good combination and make a wonderful mouth ulcer treatment. Just mix two drops of each oil with a glass of water and use it as a mouth rinse.

5 Neroli

Neroli I love the fresh floral scent of Neroli, also known as Orange Blossom. It's a sedative and can help relieve stress, tension and anxiety. Perfect for when the in-laws visit! (Did I say that out loud...) It can also help relieve insomnia so if sleep is an issue, try sprinkling a few drops of this on your pillow or a few drops in your bath to induce a restful sleep.

6 Lemongrass

Lemongrass I love cooking, but Christmas culinary duties can take their toll on the body and this refreshing and revitalizing essential oil can help relieve those tired and aching legs. Athletes actually use this essential oil to ease their aching muscles so after the festive 'marathon', get your significant other to treat you to a massage of your tired and aching limbs. You deserve it!

7 Juniper Berry

Juniper Berry Another essential oil which is good for the digestive system, as it stimulates elimination of toxins, is juniper berry. It has a cleansing and detoxifying effect - something most of us will be in search of come January!

So there you go, some amazing essential oils that may help you to deal with the coming weeks. They can also make wonderful gifts for friends and family if you would like to spread a little aromatherapy festive cheer. Are there any other fans of essential oils out there? What essential oils will you be using this holiday season?
