What It's Really like to Rush for a Sorority ...

Rush season is just ending at my school, and, even though I didn’t rush, I’m amazed by all of my peers who did! The rush experience was really different from what many of my friends and I thought it would be like. If you’re curious about joining a sorority, it’s important to know what it’s really like to rush!

A Lot of Time

A Lot of Time Balancing rushing and school can be a bit of a challenge. You’ll have quite a few events that take away from time you could be studying. So before you rush, make sure you’re caught up on all of your assignments for that weekend!

2

Small Talk

Small Talk I hope you like small talk! You’ll be meeting a lot of sisters as well as other hopeful members. When you do, be prepared to schmooze and make pleasant conversation. Don’t worry though, it won’t last forever. Soon enough you’ll be one big family and be able to talk to them as naturally as you would your own siblings!

Dressing to Impress

Dressing to Impress I personally love any chance to dress up! If you’re the same, this is your chance to break out all of your cutest outfits that get replaced by yoga pants and t-shirts the rest of the semester. But make sure not to overdo it. Every school’s casual vs. formal dynamic is different, so just ask around about how you should dress so you don’t stand out too much. But remember, it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed.

The Cost Might Shock You

The Cost Might Shock You Many of my friends were shocked by how expensive sorority dues are. This definitely varies by school, and whether or not it’s worth the cost is completely up to you. Regardless, that is something worth investigating before you rush, that way you aren’t taken aback when they hand you financial information.

Stereotypes

Stereotypes You'll find that some "stereotypical" sorority girls exist— the bubbly, shallow ones you see in movies. But you'll also meet young women who shatter those stereotypes and might even end up becoming your best friends! How you see it all depends on how open-minded you are.

Famous Quotes

Men in general judge more from appearances than from reality. All men have eyes, but few have the gift of penetration.

Disappointing

Disappointing You shouldn't feel wedded to a sorority before you begin the rush process begins. Getting rejected from your sorority of choice is a terrible feeling, but unfortunately it's a possibility. So try to focus on the good in each of them. That way you'll be pleased no matter what the result!

Fun!

Fun! There’s definitely good and bad parts of rushing, but everyone I know has really enjoyed their rushing experience! It's a great way to meet new people and have fun for several nights in a row. There are a few issues to be aware of beforehand, but either way, rushing will be fun and memorable.

If and when the time comes, I wish you a happy rush season! Is there anything in particular about rushing that you're nervous or excited for?
