11 Colors and Their Meanings in the World of Feng Shui ...

It’s no surprise that in the colors of Feng Shui, red is one of the most important what with Feng Shui being an eastern philosophy. Red is intense, represents the element of fire and is considered lucky. It is hot and bold and daring. It should be used in small amounts to direct energy to specific areas around the home where other elements of Feng Shui feature. It is to be avoided by people who are anxious or overactive and is certainly not a good color in the bedroom for insomniacs.

In Feng Shui, blue is the counterbalance to red. Blue is the calm to red’s flame. It represents the sky and the ocean and the spirituality of openness. Blue signifies peace, calm and truth, and is usually the favorite color of spiritually–attuned people. The “wrong” shades of blue can also create a sense of vastness and are to be avoided if depressed.

When you open up your closet how much black do you see? We really couldn’t exist without black in our wardrobe could we? But in the meaning of colors in Feng Shui, black is not so great. Black is considered to be introspective and representative of the void. Black is mysterious, hidden, secret and protective – the opposite of the tenet of openness, one of the cornerstones of Feng Shui. Black is not a color to choose when you want to feel uplifted or you have the need to express yourself.

You could have guessed the meaning of white in Feng Shui. It does mean purity, and innocence. White is cleansing and signifies light and freedom. It also signifies new beginnings (think of a bridal gown – marriage is a whole new beginning) and as the direct opposite to the void represented by black, white signifies the whole.

When it comes to Feng Shui colors, green is supremely important. Green is located in the heart in the chakra system and it is representative of growth and balance. The association with growth features further in Feng Shui with the principle of keeping living plants in the home. A plant is alive and it is green. When placed in certain locations in the home, the green, the growth and the life will engender prosperity. (I wonder if that’s why dollars are green?) Green is lively and fresh. It is a great color for home décor and every girl should have something green in her wardrobe.

There is nothing very exciting about the significance in Feng Shui, but it’s that very nature that gives it meaning. Brown represents the earth. It is rooted and signifies nurturing and grounding. It is one of the quiet Feng Shui colors and is for times of contentment and peace. Avoid brown when embarking on a new project, when you want to branch out or a making a change to a phase in your life.

If you want an antidote to the grounding of brown, look to regal purple. Purple is royal and represents wealth. It shouts opulence as well as representing sagacity. But it doesn’t express extraversion – it is quietly deep and noble. An over-indulgence in purple can represent a loss of connection with the earth (and the real world!)

Pink is one of the colors that women can mostly relate to and you’ll see why when you know that it represents feminine energy. It explains the female attraction to pink and why pink is so prevalent in marketing for a female audience. Pink represents unconditional love and romance. It’s no surprise then that if you want to appear strong and need a bit of masculinity to achieve something, avoid dressing in pink.

Yellow is one of the uplifting colors in Feng Shui. It is considered a happy color and mentally stimulating. Yellow is the color of the sun and who isn’t more cheerful when the sun comes out? As the sun color it represents power and energy and activity. It is not a color that will soothe frayed nerves, but it will engender a smile on the right occasion.

Grey represents heaven. It represents synchronicity. I love that grey is often used to describe blandness, yet in Feng Shui it means a sense of achievement and comfort in where you have reached. People who love grey are empowered with a sense to help others.

Orange is the most sociable of Feng shui colors. It is the color of extroverts and creative people. As a social color, orange represents happiness and fun. Orange is lively and exuberant and therefore, definitely to be avoided when you want peace and time and space to reflect or meditate.
